My Favorite Spot... the Library!

Seymour Library has been rated one of the top 10 college libraries in the nation, and it is INCREDIBLE!  It's huge and and warm, with lots of old books and places to sit and study!  Here are some pictures I took the other night I was there.  I probably only uploaded half of the pictures I took- there are so many cool places in the library that I couldn't possibly put them all up.

me learning something new!

not taken at night, but a gorgeous study room!

some old guy. lots of these kind of paintings around.

^ this room is filled with old censuses

A book Jack and I found on the shelf- a Mark Twain book from 1902!

I love the way the windows are lit up at night.

Pretty cool!  The library is my favorite part of campus.

Knox in Images

It is a little disconcerting to sit down sleepy-eyed on the toilet at 2AM to look up and see Albert Einstein staring at you disapprovingly from the stall door...

And then to turn the corner out of the bathroom, and to see a PERSON out of the corner of your eye.  You've heard stories of Galesburg teenagers that break into the suites, and you turn quickly to see what it is...

It never ends.

Then there are the "Creative Students" on campus...

Pictures of Dorm Room

The First Week

I have officially lasted one week in college.  I arrived last Saturday, and it is now the following Saturday.  No matter what happens....I lasted a week.

The first 5 days were almost all orientation activities for the freshmen.  The upperclassmen didn't even arrive until Wednesday, so for a few short days Knox revolved around us freshmen.  There were meetings upon meetings of policies, rules, learning how things worked, etc.   Much of it was helpful (campus security) but some if it was unnecessary and ran pretty long.  One of the longer seminars was about the infamous Knox Honor Code, which is the strict no-cheating policy.  The seminar was more trying to scare us than actually inform us.  The first time you are discovered not citing your work, blatantly cheating off another student's test or copying their paper, taking your test in the wrong place (the professors allow you to take exams anywhere on campus with the exception of a few select spots), or the seemingly innocent putting 2 names on a lab report because you thought it was group work, you go directly to the Honor Board, which is a committee of Knox students who hear your case and decide if you are innocent guilty.  In this legal system you are guilty until proven innocent.  Rumor is they hardly let anyone off.  First offense is an F in the course.  Second offense you are....EXPELLED.  It is a big deal.

There have been other really fun activities, like a talent show, the Knox jazz quartet has played, and there have been fun games like glow-in-the-dark Frisbee.  I've met a lot of people, especially in my classes:  Intro to Psychology, Freshman Preceptorial (a freshman required class that discusses big ideas like oppression, power, etc. through literature and writing) and Contemporary Social Issues, a sociology class, which seems really cool.

I can't wait to meet even more people!  Jack has met a lot of people too.  He is in Chicago for a soccer tournament, and gets back Sunday night.

Well I better go, I've never had more homework in my life!!!
